TUTORIAL: Making a Music Mashup Video

Have you ever tried to create a video for a music mashup or remix you have made? After trying to make one for the first time recently I have decided to share what I've learnt so far as there aren't really any tutorials dedicated to this subject online. The benefit of making a video for your mashup is that theoretically it will be more interesting to watch for your viewers than a simple 'still' video such as this.

Let me point out that this post is concerned with making a music mashup video, which involves is two or more songs mashed together like this. This post is not concerned with mashup videos like this, where the mashup is of two or more films or television programs that don't accompany a song.

Approach 1 - Use the official videos of the songs in the mashup.

In mashup music videos like this the video has been created by combining scenes from the original videos of the songs used in the mashup. To create a video like this you will need a video editing software application, your mashup audio file and digital file versions of any videos you wish to use in your mashup video. Once you have these things you can set about making your video.

Christina Aguilera ft Redman vs Neon Neon - Dirrty Raquel

This mashup was created using the acapella version of 'Dirrty' by Christina Aguilera featuring Redman and the instrumental version of 'Raquel' by Neon Neon.

This mashup was meant to have a video but YouTube blocked it so all you mashup fans will have to make do with the plain old still video instead :)

If you aren't familiar with Neon Neon they are comprised of Boom Bip and Gruff Rhys, who is perhaps best known as lead singer of the Super Furry Animals. The original version of the track 'Raquel' can be found on Neon Neon's debut album - Stainless Style.

Dizzee Rascal vs Franz Ferdinand - Take Me Out Look Sharp

This mashup was created using the unofficial acapella version of 'Fix Up Look Sharp' by Dizzee Rascal and a chiptune remix of 'Take Me Out' by Franz Ferdinand.

Also this mashup is entered in the April 2014 Mashstix mashup challenge. Checkout this link to hear all the submissions, mashstix members will vote for their favourite sometime around the end of the month.

Originally I planned to use the official Take Me Out instrumental for this mashup but it didn't seem to match the vocals correctly so instead plumped for this excellent chiptune remix of Take Me Out (which has a bit of Aerodynamic by Daft Punk thrown in as well). You can hear the original version of this remix here but I'm not sure who actually created it. Of course I would give them a shoutout but the website this track originated from (8bc.com) has since gone out of existence so there is no way to be sure who actually made it.

In progress: 2014 mashup album + new music.

Hi there!

First up I'd like to say thank you to everyone who has checked out my mashups so far this year.

As usual with mashups the feedback has ranged from positive... to slightly less positive.

First up here's the good; Andrew W.K. and Akira The Don liking/favouriting the mashups I created featuring them, and also managing to get at least one vote on the Mashstix monthly challenge (I didn't vote for myself before you ask ;) ).

And then there's the not so good, which mainly consists of fans of Feeder and Mansun 'hating on' my mashups of those artists.

You can judge for yourself what you think of my mashups from 2014 as they are all all included in the playlist below.



My current plan is to release a new mashup each week for the next month or so, by which point I will have uploaded 10 new mashups in 2014. Once this many of my mashups are online I will make them all available to download as a free album for you to enjoy!

Beyond that I plan to work on some of my own music again with a view to getting it online and playing it live some point later in the year. To hear my previous musical attempts checkout this page of my blog or my soundcloud.
